A Life in Haven

A Life in Haven
An adopted home
Bobbi leaves college and settles at the old farm, where she writes Western novels and builds a self-reliant life. The town and the land become her chosen home.
Independence and attachment
Her closest continuing relationship is with Gardener, an old lover and friend. Her life appears settled, even as age, solitude, and the approaching loss of Peter trouble her.
The Discovery’s Pull

The Discovery’s Pull
A chance encounter
Bobbi stumbles over the buried ship and tries to leave it alone. She returns days later, driven to dig despite the danger she senses.
The cost of knowledge
The ship brings physical symptoms and a trance-like capacity to work. Bobbi’s curiosity becomes entangled with an influence she does not understand.
A New Capacity

A New Capacity
Impossible inventions
Bobbi builds a power source and a thought-sensitive typewriter, producing a novel in a burst of work. These inventions seem to answer needs she did not know how to meet.
A divided identity
She calls herself an idiot savant and recognizes that the ship supplies abilities without understanding. Her fear of exposure competes with fascination and ambition.
The Becoming Deepens

The Becoming Deepens
Shared influence
Bobbi becomes increasingly linked to Haven’s collective mind and helps residents reach the ship. Her original personality remains present but loses authority.
Human costs concealed
She lies about Peter, permits the use of living beings as power sources, and hides what happens to people who enter the shed. The gifts are inseparable from exploitation.
A Last Human Choice

A Last Human Choice
Conflict with Gardener
Bobbi tries to force Gardener into submission after he challenges the town’s behavior. Their former intimacy cannot overcome the difference between them.
Death and release
Gardener shoots Bobbi after her weapon misfires and she threatens him. Her death ends their relationship but also helps free him to act against the ship and the town.
